At Meadows of Rosehill, our green burials are designed to return the earth to the way it was before we opened up the one-acre area for interment. We have instituted land-use policies that minimize the amount of disruption that is caused to the earth by the burials, with the overall goal of returning the meadow to its original state. This helps to promote biodiversity and animal habitation within Meadows of Rosehill, allowing it to flourish as a meadow once again in the future. We are very proud to be able to provide people with this service, as there are currently no other green burial cemeteries located within Edmonton.
How does your green burial work?
Our green burials at the Meadows of Rosehill are designed to have the smallest environmental impact possible, while still providing families a way to respectfully honour the life of their loved one. Our green burials are carried out in the following way:
- The body is either placed directly into the earth with a biodegradable casket or burial shroud
- No concrete burial liners are used in the Meadows of Rosehill
- No embalming fluid is used to preserve the body
- There are no individual headstones, memorials, or grave markers (though GPS coordinates for a specific plot are available for families who wish to visit)
- A communal memorial denotes and remembers those who are buried within the Meadows of Rosehill
- The deceased is not buried in specific plots, but rather ones that are available at the time of their death so as to minimize disruption to the earth
The goal of Meadows of Rosehill is to mitigate the ecological footprint of burials so that in the future it would be virtually impossible to recognize the area as a cemetery. Instead, the grounds will have fully returned to the meadow that it previously was.

Each surveyed plot is assigned GPS coordinates which are made available to the family, so they may visit the exact location where their loved one is buried if they so wish.
Yes, you will still need a funeral home for one of our green burials. The funeral home will assist in transferring the deceased, registering the death with vital statistics, provide the family with a burial shroud or biodegradable casket, and provide options for the graveside service.
